Transformational Personal Theatre

Transformational Personal Theatre is multi-media performance art based on the true life stories of the performers. Through a wide range of creative mediums performers are able to access and express deep core material that is witnessed by a public audience. This process of being witnessed as a performer allows for the release of entrenched patterns and perceptions, and generates the hope for healing from wounding due to negative personal experience and trauma. In turn, audience members who witness the courage of the performers are moved to take the risk in their own lives to be brave in living who they most authentically are.

In the tradition of kindred forms of ritual and experimental theater, Transformational Personal Theatre is a hybrid of various expressive arts modalities. Through a facilitated process TPT gives individuals permission and freedom to tell their stories from the inside out, rather than primarily utilizing cognition and literal language as is common to most talk therapy. TPT operates from a strengths-based approach, provides an holistic opportunity to find the voice of one’s soul, and is complimentary to all therapeutic treatment programs.

What is unique about the TPT process is the intentional focus on making the development of the show a healing experience in itself. To this end, experiential mini-workshops by guest presenters on topics related to physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness are built into the rehearsal schedule. In addition, therapeutic art projects are turned into costumes and props. Resources and referrals are provided for any member of the ensemble in need of added support.

In our culture it is a common experience for one’s essence, purpose, and calling to be squelched at a young age by all manner of circumstance. As a supportive theater-village community, TPT offers a grounding point and safety net for those who come in need of rediscovering and reclaiming who they truly are. It is from this place of honoring and affirming the worth, beauty, and magnificence of each fellow being that the hope for healing can be generated. In walking through the fire of both pain and inspiration, one can come alive again and shine to bring more light into the world.

In many shamanic societies, if you came to a shaman or medicine person complaining of being disheartened, dispirited, or depressed, they would ask one of four questions: When did you stop dancing? When did you stop singing? When did you stop being enchanted by stories? When did you stop finding comfort in the sweet territory of silence? Where we have stopped dancing, singing, being enchanted by stories, or finding comfort in silence is where we have experienced loss of the soul. Dancing, singing, storytelling, and silence are the four healing salves.
